How to choose the right mattress

Only the right mattress will ensure a healthy rest. A mattress is not just an ordinary attribute of a bedroom interior – our health depends on it.

At first, it may seem that the mattress is worth an unreasonable amount of money. But we must not forget that you buy a quality mattress once and for many years – therefore, you cannot focus only on the price. Each person sleeps about 8 hours a day. We spend over 30% of our time in bed. Sleep has a special meaning for a person. This is when our body recovers and prepares for the next day. The place where we sleep is very important for a good rest.

We often don’t think about the fact that today there are many different types of mattresses: foam, latex, pocket, Bonnell, coconut, anti-allergic and many other types. Each mattress consists of two main elements: filling the material with which it is covered on the outside, a cover.

  • First of all, it is worth paying attention to the filling of the mattress, because it is it that affects the comfort of sleep, rest and health. The filling should ensure correct body position, quality of support for the spine and its natural curves. Each type of mattress will have different characteristics.
  • Thanks to the cover, our mattress always looks like new one, and at the same time it is properly protected from damage to the filling. A properly selected cover will certainly increase sleep comfort and keep the mattress in good condition for longer.

By the type of filling, mattresses can be divided into 2 large groups:

  • spring (pocket springs, bonnel springs)
  • foam (latex, thermoelastic, flexible polyurethane foam, etc.)

Spring mattresses

  • Bonnell mattresses are a system of single springs interconnected by a spiral wire. Consequently, the force of the sleeper’s weight acting on the mattress is distributed over its entire surface. Thus, the mattress can be used by different people, with different body weight and with different preferences for body position during sleep. However, this also leads to the fact that if two people sleep on a mattress, each change in the position of one will be strongly felt by the other.
  • Pocket spring mattresses will be your best choice. Springs with varying degrees of stiffness are placed in seven zones to provide adequate support for individual body parts. They are packed in individual pockets, so each one works independently under pressure. The pocket design makes the mattress more comfortable as its point elasticity is higher. The mattress is quiet, ideally adapts to the shape of the body, and those lying next to you practically do not feel the change in the position of the neighbor’s body.

Polyurethane foam mattresses

Polyurethane foam models are another type of mattress that is increasingly offered by manufacturers in the modern market. The wide family of foam mattresses includes various types of polyurethane foam. Advanced production technologies make it possible to make them of high quality, practically impervious to deformation over time, while guaranteeing hygiene of use. For more sleep comfort, you should choose mattresses made of highly elastic thermoelastic (VISCO) foam or latex foam.

Thermoplastic foam mattresses, also known as lazy foam or memory foam. Thanks to its slow return to its original state and original properties of pressure reduction, it does not create resistance, which prevents the formation of pressure ulcers and stabilizes the body in an optimal position for sleeping. This is a component that reacts not only to pressure, but also to body temperature – under its influence it softens and adapts to the shape of the body. Unlike its ancestors, VISCO foam rubber is only an addition to a mattress – it needs a more stable base. Mattresses with such filling are very comfortable, they perfectly interact with the human body, giving the impression of gentle wrapping.

High resilient (HR) foam mattresses. It is a type of polyurethane foam with increased elasticity and strength. Unlike ordinary foam rubber, it has a more complex structure. It consists of millions of bubbles, which ensures a perfect fit of the mattress to the anatomical shape of the body and guarantees pleasant comfort during sleep, while keeping the material relatively light. This means that high resilience foam mattresses are quite lightweight, allowing for easy and free movement. And this, as you know, significantly improves the durability of the mattress.

Latex foam mattresses. One of the best mattress components is latex. This is the foam formed as a result of the vulcanization of rubber milk, that is, the resin of rubber trees. The material is appreciated primarily for its orthopedic properties – it perfectly supports the figure and quickly responds to any change in position during sleep. It is especially recommended for allergy sufferers – it creates an environment that is unfavorable for the development of dust mites, does not absorb moisture, has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Mixed latex is most common in mattresses. Usually produced in a proportion of 20% natural latex and 80% synthetic.
